Sequelae of ROP and scarring from ROP in laser treatment done as neonate
Sequelae of ROP in adulthood: 21 year old female that was born prematurely and had received retinal laser treatment as neonate. Patient presented with an acute vitreous hemorrhage that was cleared with vitrectomy surgery. The angiography presented was done 1 day postop. The various angiographic findings are described in the image. The bigger lesson here, beyond the interesting clinical findings, is that premature babies hopefully grow into adult and will present with problems associated with their original retinopathy of prematurity. Whether you are a retina specialist that treats these referred cases, or a primary eye doctor with a general clinic, you WILL see these patients. The cohort of babies that received the first cryo and laser treatments are now young adults. So be careful with that young high miope that comes in for contact lenses or even refractive surgery. They may be adult ROPs. --- I'm heading back to the US today after spending some good time with family, friends and patients. I admit that I'm no longer able to handle the heat and humidity of the tropics as I used to! But the topic of ROP is very important in all Latin America. We have an epidemic of ROP and we as physicians and surgeons must be prepared to take care of these difficult patients.
